How to prepare each food

Bread

Prep

Offer small soft pieces of bread as your baby's pincer grasp develops, lightly toasted so they don't squash into a sticky lump. A thin spread of mashed avocado, smooth nut or seed butter, or hummus adds moisture and flavor. Keep crusts soft or remove very hard ones.

Cut

Small soft pieces under ½ inch, lightly toasted. Add a thin moist spread; avoid thick globs of nut butter.

Note

Soft, fresh bread can compress into a sticky wad that is hard to clear, and hard crusts can break off in firm pieces. Toast it lightly, cut it into strips or small pieces, add a thin moist spread, and always supervise eating.

Apple

Prep

Offer soft-cooked apple in small bite-size pieces, or finely grate raw apple. Keep raw apple to fine shreds only; whole or chunky raw apple stays off the menu.

Cut

Small soft-cooked pieces (about half an inch) or finely grated raw.

Note

Raw apple is firm and a leading choking hazard for young children. Cook it until fork-soft or grate it finely; avoid raw chunks, slices, and sticks until around age four.

Coconut

Prep

Keep coconut in soft, easy-to-manage forms. General preparation information: stir finely grated fresh coconut into yogurt, porridge or fruit purée so it softens, blend coconut milk into dishes, or offer plain coconut yogurt. Dried coconut flakes and firm chunks stay dry and hard, so leave those out for now.

Cut

Finely grated fresh coconut softened into a carrier food; spoonable yogurt or purée. Still no dry flakes or firm chunks.

Note

Hard, dry or shredded coconut is fibrous and tough to chew, which makes it a choking concern. Keep coconut soft: blend it into purées, finely grate fresh coconut into a carrier food, or use coconut yogurt, milk or cream. Leave dry coconut flakes and firm chunks out until your child chews well.

Cinnamon

Prep

Keep cinnamon as a small flavoring stirred into food. It works well in porridge, soft baked apple or pear, mashed sweet potato, pancakes, or yogurt. A pinch is plenty, and mixing it through a moist food keeps it from being a dry, dusty mouthful.

Cut

Still a pinch of ground cinnamon mixed into moist food, not loose powder.

Note

Loose dry cinnamon powder can make a baby cough or gag if it is inhaled. Always mix it into a moist food and never let your baby eat it dry from a spoon.

Peanut butter

Prep

Keep peanut exposure regular once it has been tolerated. Thin smooth peanut butter into food or spread a thin layer on soft toast or soft fruit. Still avoid thick scoops and any chunky style.

Cut

No pieces. Keep it thinned or a thin spread; no thick scoops or chunky butter.

Note

A thick spoonful or blob of peanut butter is a choking hazard because it is sticky and can coat the throat. Always thin it with water, breast milk, formula, or a purée, or spread a very thin layer on a soft food. Whole peanuts and chunky peanut butter are not safe before about age five.

Olive oil

Prep

Keep using olive oil to cook and finish family foods cut to your child's stage. A light drizzle over soft vegetables, beans, or grains carries flavor and helps with vitamin absorption.

Cut

No cutting needed; drizzle lightly over or mix into the food.

Egg

Prep

Keep the egg fully cooked and offer it as easy finger food. As the pincer grasp develops, your little one can pick up small pieces on their own.

Cut

Offer omelet strips, quartered hard-boiled egg, or chopped scramble.

Coconut milk

Prep

Cook plain coconut milk into mild sauces, soft curries, oatmeal, or rice dishes. Keep added salt out and let it carry soft, gummable pieces of vegetable or grain.

Cut

Liquid cooked into a dish; cut any solid pieces it carries to ½ inch and soft.

Putting it together

Sandwich bread filled with cinnamon-cooked apple, dipped in egg and pan-toasted until golden.
