How to prepare each food

Egg

Prep

Keep the egg fully cooked and offer it as easy finger food. As the pincer grasp develops, your little one can pick up small pieces on their own.

Cut

Offer omelet strips, quartered hard-boiled egg, or chopped scramble.

Tomato

Prep

Offer small soft pieces of peeled, de-seeded ripe tomato as the pincer grasp develops. Keep cherry and grape tomatoes quartered lengthwise into four small pieces so no round or rounded-half shape remains.

Cut

Small soft peeled pieces; cherry/grape tomatoes quartered lengthwise (four pieces).

Note

Cherry and grape tomatoes are a classic choking shape: whole or halved, they can block a small airway. Always quarter them lengthwise into small pieces, and keep doing so until about age 4. Peel and de-seed larger tomatoes, since the skin can bunch up while chewing.

Mozzarella cheese

Prep

Keep offering pasteurized mozzarella finely grated or melted into dishes. As the pincer grasp develops, very thin short strips of soft fresh mozzarella can be tried, but skip balls, rounds, and chunks.

Cut

Finely grated, melted, or very thin soft strips; no balls, rounds, or chunks.

Note

A mozzarella ball, a large piece, or a thick round slice is a choking hazard because of its round, springy shape. Grate it, melt it, or cut it into small thin soft strips rather than offering balls or chunks, and keep this up through the toddler years.

Olive oil

Prep

Keep using olive oil to cook and finish family foods cut to your child's stage. A light drizzle over soft vegetables, beans, or grains carries flavor and helps with vitamin absorption.

Cut

No cutting needed; drizzle lightly over or mix into the food.

Putting it together

A thin egg base topped with tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and oregano, cooked in a pan.
