Cucumber

Usually introduced around 6 months

Choking notes

Cucumber rounds are slippery and can block the airway. Favor thin strips or small dice for young children.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Peel if the skin is thick or waxed. Soft inner flesh only for the youngest eaters. Cucumber rounds are a slip hazard.

Cut:

Finger-length thin strips with seeds scooped out, or grated.

9-12 months

Prep:

Peeled or thin-skin, seeds removed if large.

Cut:

Thin strips or small dice. Skip rounds.

12-18 months

Prep:

As in salads, still in thin strips rather than rounds.

Cut:

Strips or small dice.
