How to prepare each food

Quinoa

Prep

Serve quinoa as part of family meals, mixed into soft vegetables, beans, or stews. Your toddler can manage it loose with a spoon or hands. Keep it moist and low in salt.

Cut

Loose soft grains, mixed into other soft foods. No cutting needed.

Tomato

Prep

Serve bite-size pieces of soft ripe tomato. Cherry and grape tomatoes still keep their round shape, so keep quartering them lengthwise into small pieces; do not offer them whole or simply halved.

Cut

Bite-size soft pieces; cherry/grape tomatoes still quartered lengthwise.

Note

Cherry and grape tomatoes are a classic choking shape: whole or halved, they can block a small airway. Always quarter them lengthwise into small pieces, and keep doing so until about age 4. Peel and de-seed larger tomatoes, since the skin can bunch up while chewing.

Lemon

Prep

Lemon stays a flavoring at this age. Juice in dressings, sauces, and over cooked dishes, or zest in baked goods, works well. If your toddler wants to try a small piece of peeled, seedless flesh, expect a pucker; keep pieces small and soft. Limit very acidic foods if you notice mouth or diaper-area irritation.

Cut

Juice and zest in dishes; any flesh peeled, seeded, and in small soft pieces.

Onion

Prep

Soft-cooked onion can go into family meals in small pieces. If you offer raw onion later, keep it very finely chopped, since raw it stays crunchy and strong.

Cut

Small soft-cooked pieces; raw only very finely chopped.

Cucumber

Prep

Offer peeled cucumber in small, thin pieces or matchsticks. Skip thick raw coins, which keep the firm round shape that is harder to manage without molars.

Cut

Small thin pieces or matchsticks, peeled β€” not thick coins.

Note

Raw cucumber is firm and crunchy, so hard coins, rounds, or chunks are a choking risk for babies. Peel it and serve it as a large spear to gnaw on, finely grated, or soft-cooked rather than in raw bite-size pieces.

Parsley

Prep

Use parsley freely as a seasoning in family meals, chopped and stirred through dishes or sprinkled on top. Small soft pieces of raw leaf mixed into food are fine now.

Cut

Chop and stir through dishes, or scatter small pieces on top.

Olive oil

Prep

Olive oil fits everyday family cooking now: sautΓ©ing, roasting, or finishing dishes with a light drizzle. Keep added salt low in the food you cook with it.

Cut

No cutting needed; use as a cooking or finishing fat.

Putting it together

A cold quinoa salad with finely chopped tomato, cucumber, onion, and parsley.
