How to prepare each food

Banana

Prep

As the pincer grasp develops, offer small soft pieces or thin slices the baby can pick up. Keep using ripe banana so each piece squishes easily. Rolling pieces in a little fine cereal can make slippery banana easier to grip.

Cut

Small soft pieces or thin slices, about Β½ inch (1 cm).

Note

Banana is low-risk when fully ripe and soft. A firm or under-ripe banana is harder to manage, so mash it or wait until it ripens. Always supervise eating.

Strawberry

Prep

As your baby picks up smaller pieces, serve ripe strawberries in thin slices or small chopped pieces. Quarter any small whole berries lengthwise so none stays round. Keep choosing soft, ripe fruit.

Cut

Thin slices or small pieces; small whole berries quartered lengthwise.

Note

A whole strawberry is round and firm enough to block a small airway. Cut or mash it so no whole, firm berry is offered. Slice into thin pieces or quarter lengthwise, and choose ripe, soft fruit.

Yogurt

Prep

Keep offering plain, full-fat, pasteurized yogurt, letting your baby practice self-feeding with a spoon. You can thicken it with mashed fruit or fold it into porridge. Still avoid sweetened and honey-containing yogurts.

Cut

Spoonable. Offer on a spoon for self-feeding practice.

Putting it together

Blended frozen banana and strawberry stirred into plain yogurt.
