Apple

Prep

Cook apple until very soft, then mash or puree it smooth, or offer a soft-cooked finger-length wedge. Raw apple is hard and a top choking hazard, so always cook it soft or finely grate it; never serve raw chunks, slices, or sticks.

Cut

Smooth puree, soft mash, or a soft-cooked finger-length wedge.

Raw apple is firm and a leading choking hazard for young children. Cook it until fork-soft or grate it finely; avoid raw chunks, slices, and sticks until around age four.

Blueberry

Prep

A whole blueberry is a small round shape, so do not serve it whole. Squish each berry between your fingers until it bursts, or cut it into quarters. Mashed blueberry stirred into yogurt, oatmeal, or another purรฉe works well too. Choose soft, ripe berries.

Cut

Squished until it bursts, quartered, or mashed; never whole.

Note

A whole blueberry is a small round shape that can slip down and block a small airway. Squish, quarter, or halve each berry for younger babies and choose soft, ripe ones. Always supervise.

Putting it together

Cook the apple with the blueberries, then mash into a soft compote.
