Cornmeal (polenta)

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Use cornmeal to make grits, soft polenta, porridge, or thick stews baby can scoop. Avoid bread chunks that can stick to the palate.

Cut:

Soft, scoopable consistency. Avoid firm polenta cubes; soft scoopable form only.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve scoopable cornmeal forms: grits, soft polenta, porridge, or thick stews. As pincer grasp emerges, offer bite-sized pancakes.

Cut:

Scoopable consistency or bite-sized pancake pieces.

12-18 months

Prep:

Continue with grits, polenta, porridge, breads, pancakes, curries, soups, and stews. Cornmeal thickens stews for spoon practice.

Cut:

All cornmeal forms. Thickened stews great for spoon practice.
