How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Offer canned mackerel strips (canning softens bones) or fresh cooked, deboned fish in strips two pinky fingers wide. Flaked with avocado or yogurt also works.

Cut:

Strips two pinky fingers wide. Canned bones are soft and edible.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer bite-sized pieces of canned or fresh cooked deboned mackerel for pincer grasp practice, or longer strips for biting and tearing.

Cut:

Bite-sized pieces or longer strips, skin removed.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve canned or cooked deboned mackerel in strips, bite-sized pieces, cakes, or flaked. Smoked mackerel can be served regularly at this age.

Cut:

Strips, bite-sized pieces, or flakes. Good age for utensil practice.
