How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Smash or blend cooked chickpeas into a textured mash or paste in a bowl for baby to scoop. Hummus is fine if sesame is ruled out.

Cut:

Mashed or pureed. Skins are not a choking hazard but can cause gagging, so peel them if you prefer.

9-12 months

Prep:

Once the pincer grasp develops, offer fully cooked chickpeas flattened with thumb or fork. Torn pieces of chickpea-flour pancakes also work well.

Cut:

Flatten each chickpea between thumb and table to remove the round shape, or break pancakes into bite-sized pieces.

12-18 months

Prep:

Continue with flattened chickpeas, gradually flattening less. Whole soft-cooked chickpeas may be okay if the toddler chews well and does not stuff their mouth.

Cut:

Lightly flattened, or whole if eating skills are mature. Offer one at a time at first and stay within arm's reach.
