For the first 4-6 months, breast milk or formula is all your baby needs. They eat in small, frequent bursts because their stomach is tiny. A newborn's stomach holds about 5-7 ml at birth and grows to about 150 ml by one month.
Solid food usually starts between 4 and 6 months, when your baby can sit with support and shows interest in what you're eating. Start simple: single-ingredient purees or soft foods, one new food every few days. Milk stays the primary nutrition source until 12 months.
By their first birthday, most babies eat three meals and two snacks a day and get about 16-24 oz of whole milk. If your baby is growing well and seems satisfied, they're probably getting enough. Your pediatrician tracks this at every visit.
