Cereal, Cow's milk, Banana and Strawberry

From 12 months Β· 4 foods

Ingredients

How to prepare each food

Cereal

Prep

Serve cereal as a thicker breakfast porridge or stirred into other soft dishes. Soft, low-sugar whole-grain cereals fit well as your toddler eats more textures. Keep portions moist, and avoid hard, crunchy, or sugary cereals; limit added salt and sugar.

Cut

Moist, thick porridge or soft portions. Avoid hard or crunchy cereals.

Cow's milk

Prep

From the first birthday, full-fat pasteurized cow's milk can be offered as a main drink. Serve it in an open or sippy cup with meals. Keep it whole (not skimmed or low-fat) so toddlers get the fat they need, and watch the total so milk doesn't crowd out food and iron-rich meals.

Cut

Poured into an open or sippy cup, offered with meals.

Banana

Prep

Offer bite-size soft chunks. A whole peeled banana works for self-feeding too, with supervision, since it mashes as the toddler bites. Keep pieces small and stay close while eating.

Cut

Bite-size soft chunks, or a whole peeled banana with supervision.

Note

Banana is low-risk when fully ripe and soft. A firm or under-ripe banana is harder to manage, so mash it or wait until it ripens. Always supervise eating.

Strawberry

Prep

Serve ripe strawberries in small bite-size pieces. Slice larger berries, and quarter smaller whole ones lengthwise so no firm, round piece remains. Supervise while eating.

Cut

Small bite-size pieces; whole berries sliced or quartered lengthwise.

Note

A whole strawberry is round and firm enough to block a small airway. Cut or mash it so no whole, firm berry is offered. Slice into thin pieces or quarter lengthwise, and choose ripe, soft fruit.

Putting it together

Stir the cereal into the cow's milk and top with sliced banana and strawberry.
