How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Offer large sections of plantain about the size of two adult fingers, cooked until soft and easily mashable. Or serve mashed cooked plantain loosened with milk or stock.

Cut:

Two-finger-sized soft cooked spears, or mashed.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer bite-sized pieces or slices of soft, well-cooked plantain on their own or in mixed dishes. Hold off on fried plantains like tostones with hard textures.

Cut:

Bite-sized pieces of soft cooked plantain; no fried tostones yet.

12-18 months

Prep:

Continue offering soft cooked plantain in any form; hold off on tostones, fritters, and chips until well after age 2 once chewing is established.

Cut:

Soft cooked plantain in any shape; no fried/crispy forms yet.
