6-9 months

Prep:

Crush or blend cooked kidney beans into a textured mash. Stir into chili, salads, or stews and mash for baby. Start with small portions.

Cut:

Crushed mash or smooth paste; pre-load on a spoon if helpful.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer whole kidney beans fully cooked until soft and gently flattened for the developing pincer grasp. Continue mashed or pureed beans as alternative.

Cut:

Whole soft beans gently flattened; or mashed.

12-18 months

Prep:

Toddlers can handle whole well-cooked kidney beans. Spear with a fork and lay the utensil next to the food for self-feeding practice.

Cut:

Whole well-cooked beans; flatten or mash if you prefer.
