Ginger

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Stir small amounts of grated fresh ginger or powdered ginger into baby's food, season fruit or vegetable spears, or add to soft rice balls and meatballs.

Cut:

Grated fresh or powdered, used as seasoning.

9-12 months

Prep:

Make a sauce with fresh ginger and drizzle on baby's meal. Cooking the ginger first mellows its flavor if it tastes too sharp.

Cut:

Grated or in sauces, mixed into food.

12-18 months

Prep:

Use ginger in pancakes, muffins, banana bread, dosa, naan, paratha, or roti. Warm (not hot) ginger tea served in an open cup is great for drinking practice.

Cut:

Thin slices, grated, or pickled in baked goods or tea.
