Garlic

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Use grated garlic or garlic powder to season congee, mashed veg, or sour cream. Drizzle a touch of garlic oil, or spread roasted garlic on toast strips.

Cut:

Always grate or finely chop. Whole or chunky raw garlic is a choking risk. Sauces like pesto, chimichurri, or salsa verde are fine.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve dishes with thin slices of cooked garlic, grated garlic, garlic powder, garlic oil, or soft roasted garlic. Cooked tastes more mellow than raw.

Cut:

If trying raw garlic, start with a tiny grated or finely chopped amount. Avoid chunks of raw garlic at this age.

12-18 months

Prep:

Keep seasoning meals with garlic. Cooked garlic is mellow; if introducing raw, start with a tiny amount. Chunks of raw garlic remain a choking hazard.

Cut:

Use garlic in any form except raw chunks. Thin slices, grated, powder, oil, or roasted spread are all fine.
