Pits are a choking hazard and must be removed. Fresh dates can be firm or crunchy and dried dates are sticky and hard to chew, both of which raise the choking risk.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Remove the pit. Soak dried dates in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes until fully soft, then finely chop, mash, or puree and mix into oatmeal or yogurt.

Cut:

Pit removed, softened, then finely chopped, mashed, or pureed into other foods.

9-12 months

Prep:

Remove the pit and soften dried dates in hot water until fully soft. Finely chop or mash and stir into scoopable foods, or offer a small amount of puree.

Cut:

Pit removed, softened, finely chopped or mashed into other foods.

12-18 months

Prep:

Remove the pit. Serve softened dried dates in small pieces, as a puree on their own, or mixed into scoopable foods. Fresh dates must be very soft and mash easily when pressed.
