Introducing Sesame to your baby

When to start

Around 6 months. Can be one of the first allergens introduced because it is easy to prepare.

How to serve

Stir 1-2 teaspoons tahini into yogurt, oatmeal, or pureed veg. Hummus thinned with extra lemon/water also works. Never serve whole sesame seeds (choking) or dry tahini on a spoon.

What to watch for

Hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing. Sesame allergy is rising and was added to the US top-9 list in 2023 (FASTER Act).

If a reaction happens

Mild: stop and call pediatrician. Moderate or severe: call emergency services.

How often

2-3 times per week once tolerated.
