Connect nappi to Google Home

Start a nap with “Hey Google”, log a diaper from a Nest speaker, or dim the nursery lights when the sleep timer starts. Google Home reaches nappi through Home Assistant, so you set up Home Assistant once and then pick how it talks to Google.

Before you start

  1. nappi Premium. Smart home connections are part of Premium, and one subscription covers your whole family.
  2. Home Assistant running at home, for example on a Home Assistant Green, a Raspberry Pi or a computer that stays on.
  3. The nappi integration for Home Assistant. Install it from HACS, make a connection key at nappi.app/app/connections (pick 1 year), paste it in and choose your baby. You get timer switches, log buttons and “last feed” sensors.

Choose how Home Assistant talks to Google

All three give you the same voice commands. They differ in cost, what you need at home and how long setup takes.

Easiest

Home Assistant Cloud

Cost
A Nabu Casa subscription, about $6.50 a month or $65 a year, with a free trial and no card needed to start.
You need
Nothing else. About 10 minutes.
  1. In Home Assistant, open Settings → Home Assistant Cloud and create an account or sign in. Nabu Casa now calls the service Home Assistant Link.
  2. In the Cloud settings, turn on Google Assistant.
  3. Open Settings → Voice assistants → Expose and expose your baby's nappi switches and buttons, such as “Phoebe Sleep timer” and “Phoebe Log wet diaper”.
  4. In the Google Home app, add a device, choose Works with Google, search for Home Assistant Cloud by Nabu Casa and sign in with the same account.
  5. If something is missing, say “Hey Google, sync my devices”.

Timers show up as switches. Log buttons show up as scenes, so you say “activate” for them.

Free and local

A Matter bridge

Cost
Free. Home Assistant Matter Hub is an open-source community project.
You need
A Google speaker or display that works as a Matter hub (such as a Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub, Google TV Streamer or Nest Wifi Pro), and Home Assistant OS to install it as an app (or Docker). About 20 minutes.
  1. In Home Assistant, open Settings → Apps → App store, choose Repositories from the menu and add https://github.com/riddix/home-assistant-addons. Install Home Assistant Matter Hub and start it.
  2. Open its web UI and run the Wizard to create a bridge. Include your nappi entities with the patterns switch.phoebe_* and button.phoebe_* (use your baby's name as it appears in the entity IDs).
  3. In the Google Home app, add a device, choose Matter-enabled device and scan the bridge's QR code. Google asks whether to set up an uncertified device: allow it.
  4. Name the devices and pick a room. Google talks to Home Assistant over your home network, without a Home Assistant Cloud account.

Timers and log buttons both show up as plugs. Turning on a log button logs the entry, and it shows as off again a moment later.

Free, for tinkerers

Home Assistant's own Google setup

Cost
Free.
You need
Home Assistant reachable from the internet over HTTPS (a Cloudflare Tunnel works), a Google Cloud project and about an hour.
  1. Create a cloud-to-cloud project in the Google Home Developer Console and point its account linking and fulfillment URLs at your Home Assistant.
  2. Create a Google Cloud service account, turn on the HomeGraph API and save the key in your Home Assistant config folder.
  3. Add google_assistant to configuration.yaml with your nappi switches and buttons, then restart Home Assistant.
  4. In the Google Home app, add a device, choose Works with Google and pick your project (its name starts with [test]).

The project stays in test mode, so it works for your own Google accounts. Home Assistant's guide has every field and a fix if syncing stops after about 30 days.

What to say

  • “Hey Google, turn on Phoebe Sleep timer” starts the nap. Everyone in the family sees it running in nappi.
  • “Hey Google, turn off Phoebe Sleep timer” stops it and saves the sleep, the same as stopping it in the app.
  • “Hey Google, activate Phoebe Log wet diaper” logs a wet diaper. With a Matter bridge, say “turn on” instead.
  • “Hey Google, activate Phoebe Log bottle” logs a bottle of the amount set in Home Assistant.

Long names are hard to say at 3 a.m. Rename the devices in the Google Home app, for example to “nap timer” or “wet diaper”, or add them to a Google Home routine such as “Nap time” that also dims the nursery lights.

Questions

Does nappi work with Google Home without Home Assistant?

No. Google Home reaches nappi through Home Assistant. If you use Alexa, the nappi skill works directly.

Which way should I pick?

If you want it working tonight, Home Assistant Cloud. If you have a Nest speaker or display and want it free and local, the Matter bridge. The manual setup is for people who already expose Home Assistant to the internet.

Can Google tell me when the last feed was?

Not reliably: Google Home controls switches and buttons but doesn't read out times from Home Assistant. Show the “last feed” sensors on a Home Assistant dashboard, or check the nappi app.

We have twins. Does this work for both?

Yes. Add the nappi integration once for each baby with the same key. Each baby gets their own timers and buttons, so name them clearly in Google Home.

Home Assistant, Home Assistant Cloud (Nabu Casa), Home Assistant Matter Hub and Google Home are made by other companies and communities. nappi isn't affiliated with or endorsed by them. Their menus and prices can change; these steps were checked in October 2026.
