Always cook until very soft; raw or undercooked yautia is hard and can choke. Serve in large soft pieces, not small firm chunks.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Peel and boil until very soft. Mash, or leave as a large soft piece the baby can hold. Skip salt.

Cut:

Large soft finger-length strips, or a smooth mash.

9-12 months

Prep:

Boil until soft and offer in bite-sized pieces as the pincer grasp develops. Keep it fork-tender.

Cut:

Soft pea- to grape-sized pieces.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve boiled or mashed in toddler portions; good for fork practice. Still no added salt.

Cut:

Bite-sized cubes or chunks the child can spear.
