Cook until fully tender. Serve as a large strip to gnaw or finely shred. Avoid dense, chewy chunks that can be hard to break down.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Braise or stew until very tender. Offer a large strip the baby can hold and gnaw, or shred finely and mix into a soft purée.

Cut:

One large strip about the size of two adult fingers, or finely shredded into soft mush.

9-12 months

Prep:

Keep cooking until tender. Offer small soft pieces or fine shreds as the pincer grasp develops.

Cut:

Pea-sized soft pieces or fine shreds.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve tender pieces and let the toddler practice with a fork. Keep it moist with a little sauce or broth.

Cut:

Bite-sized tender cubes about the width of one adult finger.
