Usually introduced around 6 months

High choking risk5 key nutrients

Prep warning

Use unsweetened pulp only. Many tamarind candies and pastes have added sugar or salt; skip those before 12 months.

Choking notes

Always remove the hard seeds and tough fibers before serving. Offer the soft pulp only; never give whole pods or seeds.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Soak the pulp and press it through a sieve to remove all seeds and fibers. Serve the smooth purée thinned with water, or stirred into other foods.

Cut:

A smooth, seed-free purée loose enough to scoop, or mixed into a thicker food you can offer on a preloaded spoon.

9-12 months

Prep:

Continue offering seed-free pulp. Stir a small amount into yogurt, mashed grains, or lentils for a tangy flavor your baby can self-feed.

Cut:

Seed-free pulp blended into bite-sized soft foods the baby can pick up, or served thick on a spoon.

12-18 months

Prep:

Offer seed-free pulp as a dip, sauce, or chutney for soft toddler foods. Choose unsweetened versions and watch for hidden seeds or fibers.

Cut:

A spoonful of thick seed-free pulp alongside soft foods, or used as a sauce the toddler can scoop with a fork or fingers.
