How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Serve cooked summer squash in spears for easy gripping. If slippery, roll in ground seeds or shredded coconut to add grip.

Cut:

Long spears, peel optional, seeds OK to leave in.

9-12 months

Prep:

Once pincer grasp develops, offer cooked summer squash in bite-sized pieces, or shred to minimize choking risk.

Cut:

Bite-sized cooked pieces or shredded.

12-18 months

Prep:

Continue serving bite-sized cooked pieces. Around 18 months, offer raw thin half-moons or matchsticks if biting skills are solid.

Cut:

Bite-sized cooked, or raw thin half-moons or matchsticks.
