Usually introduced around 6 months

Choking risk

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Mix finely chopped, cooked shiitake into finger foods like egg strips, or stir into soft scoopables like mashed veg or congee. Whole large caps work as a teether.

Cut:

Cooked, finely chopped or whole large cap.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve chopped cooked shiitake mixed into eggs, beans, or noodles. With the pincer grasp, slices of cooked cap work too. Remove the stem to reduce choking risk.

Cut:

Cooked chopped or sliced caps; remove stem.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve cooked shiitake chopped, sliced, or in larger sections for biting practice. Stems are OK now; cut lengthwise so they aren't round to reduce choking risk.

Cut:

Cooked any form; cut stems lengthwise so not round.
