How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Rinse sauerkraut in a colander to remove as much salt as possible. Finely chop and serve alone or mixed into other foods like applesauce.

Cut:

Rinsed, finely chopped, alone or mixed in.

9-12 months

Prep:

As baby gets more skilled at chewing and swallowing, gradually serve larger pieces of rinsed sauerkraut. Continue mixing into other foods if preferred.

Cut:

Rinsed, gradually larger pieces.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve sauerkraut on its own, folded into grain dishes, or mixed with diced apples, shredded carrots, or thinly sliced sweet peppers.

Cut:

Alone or mixed with fruit, carrot, or peppers.
