How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Remove the leafy part and offer the thick, firm ribs as strips for teething. Or finely shred cooked romaine and stir it into scoopable foods.

Cut:

Firm ribs in finger-length strips, or finely shredded and mixed in. Skip loose floppy leaves.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve romaine finely chopped, rib or leaf, to build the pincer grasp. Toss with a little dressing or offer water so stuck pieces are easier to swallow.

Cut:

Finely chopped pieces. You can still offer larger leaves for tearing practice.

12-18 months

Prep:

Offer bite-sized pieces of romaine, rib or leaf, as finger food or with a fork, or serve whole leaves. Model eating it alongside your toddler.
