Prep warning

Use pasteurized provolone only.

Choking notes

Firm cheese that can get globby and hard to manage in the mouth. Never serve in cubes or large chunks.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Serve pasteurized provolone. If melting, use shredded cheese sprinkled sparingly; large globs are hard for young babies to manage.

Cut:

Long, flat slices about the width of two adult fingers pressed together. No cubes.

9-12 months

Prep:

Tear a flat slice of pasteurized provolone into bite-sized pieces for pincer-grasp practice. Melted shredded cheese sparingly is fine.

Cut:

Bite-sized pieces torn from a flat slice. No cubes.

12-18 months

Prep:

Offer thin, flat slices of pasteurized provolone for biting practice, or tear into bite-sized pieces. You can melt a thin layer over bread, pasta, beans, or vegetables.

Cut:

Thin flat slices or bite-sized pieces. No cubes before 24 months.
