Pomegranate

Usually introduced around 6 months

Choking risk

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Crush or fully flatten pomegranate seeds and stir into a sauce or scoopable food like warm cereal or yogurt. Whole seeds are still a choking risk.

Cut:

Crushed or flattened, never whole.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve crushed or flattened seeds on their own for the pincer grasp. If pieces are too small to pick up, mix into sauce or yogurt.

Cut:

Crushed or flattened, served loose or mixed in.

12-18 months

Prep:

If the child chews well and does not overstuff, you can offer whole seeds, just a few at a time. Avoid mixing whole seeds into other dishes.

Cut:

A few whole seeds, or continue with crushed.
