How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Offer very finely chopped kumquat or a sauce made from cooked kumquats stirred into a scoopable food. Squeeze the juice on top of dishes.

Cut:

Finely chopped or cooked into sauce. Remove seeds.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer kumquats de-seeded and cut into thin rings for the developing pincer grasp. Or cook into a sauce drizzled into other foods.

Cut:

Thin rings, seeds removed.

12-18 months

Prep:

Continue thin rings. Once biting and tearing skills are consistent, try lengthwise quarters, then halved kumquats with exaggerated bite modeling.

Cut:

Thin rings, then lengthwise quarters or halves.

2 years and up

Prep:

When chewing is mature and the child sits and follows directions, whole kumquats may be offered in supervised settings. Choking risk remains real.

Cut:

Whole only with mature chewing and supervision.
