Kohlrabi

Usually introduced around 6 months

Choking risk2 key nutrients

Choking notes

Raw kohlrabi is hard and is one of the higher choking risks for this age. Cook it until fork-soft, or grate it finely if serving raw. Avoid raw hard coins, sticks, or chunks until your child chews reliably, around age 4.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep

Peel kohlrabi and cook it until a fork slides through with no resistance (steam, boil, or roast), then serve it as soft finger batons or mashed. Raw kohlrabi is hard and is a top choking risk, so only offer it raw as fine shreds; cook it soft for most servings at this age.

Cut

Soft-cooked finger-length batons, or finely grated if raw.

9-12 months

Prep

Continue serving kohlrabi soft-cooked in small pieces, or finely grated raw as your baby's pincer grasp develops. Avoid raw hard pieces, and make sure the cooked pieces stay fork-soft.

Cut

Small soft-cooked cubes or pieces; finely grated if raw.

12-18 months

Prep

Offer soft-cooked kohlrabi in small cubes or thin matchsticks, or finely grated raw mixed into a dish. Because there are no molars yet, raw hard pieces are still risky, so keep raw kohlrabi finely shredded.

Cut

Small soft cubes or thin cooked matchsticks; finely grated if raw.
