Kefir

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Offer full-fat, pasteurized, plain kefir mixed into meals or as a solid (kefir cheese), not as a drink. Stir into porridge, buckwheat, or mashed potatoes. Strained or thicker varieties work well.

Cut:

Mixed into porridge, mash, or grain dishes. Strained for thicker dip texture. No drinks yet.

12-18 months

Prep:

Offer kefir in meals and as a drink. Try a savory mint kefir drink. Watch total dairy intake: about 2 to 2.5 servings daily, since excess can lead to iron deficiency anemia.

Cut:

In meals or as a drink. Cap total dairy at about 2 to 2.5 servings per day.
