Kale

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook well and finely chop or shred. Stir into mashed vegetables, porridge, egg strips, or meat patties to keep small bits from clinging to baby's mouth.

Cut:

Soft cooked shreds in scoopable foods, or a thick raw stem as a teether. Don't worry about gentle gagging when baby explores the stem.

9-12 months

Prep:

Shredded cooked or raw kale lets baby practice picking up thin strands. Kale chips and finely chopped cooked kale stirred into other dishes also work.

Cut:

Thin shreds of cooked or raw kale. Raw is harder to chew, so expect some spitting; the texture builds eating skills.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve kale however you like, cooked or raw, chopped, shredded, or in larger pieces. Swallowing improves as molars come in.

Cut:

Bite-size or rougher pieces are fine. Pre-load an age-appropriate fork to encourage utensil practice.
