How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook fresh or frozen huckleberries into warm cereals until they burst. Or smash cooked berries and stir into porridge, ricotta, or yogurt.

Cut:

Cooked and burst, or smashed and mixed in.

9-12 months

Prep:

Flatten huckleberries to make discs and let baby pick them up. As chewing matures, flatten less over time. Or continue with cooked burst berries.

Cut:

Flattened to discs, or cooked and burst.

12-18 months

Prep:

If the toddler chews well and does not overstuff, whole ripe huckleberries can be offered in a safe setting. Model crushing the berry with teeth.

Cut:

Whole ripe berry with mature chewing, otherwise flattened.
