Herring

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Offer cooked, deboned herring fillets, or canned herring rinsed under water. Skin and bones from canned versions are softened and edible.

Cut:

Whole fillet as finger food, or mash and mix into vegetables, grains, or yogurt.

12-18 months

Prep:

Try homemade herring patties or break a fillet into flakes for the toddler to pick up. Mix flakes into grains, pasta, or top toast.

Cut:

Patties, flakes, or whole pieces. Round shapes are easier to grasp.
