Prep warning

Remove stems and any tough tops. Gooseberries are very tart; expect a strong reaction and do not add sugar.

Choking notes

Whole gooseberries are a round, firm choking hazard. Cook until soft and burst, then mash. For older babies, quarter lengthwise before offering.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook until soft and burst, then mash into a thin purée or stir into oatmeal. Do not offer raw or whole.

Cut:

Cooked and mashed, served on a spoon or spread on a strip of toast.

9-12 months

Prep:

Cook until very soft. Quarter so they can't roll, and let baby self-feed or scoop with a spoon.

Cut:

Cooked berries quartered lengthwise into small pincer-grasp pieces.

12-18 months

Prep:

Cook until soft. Quarter or halve so they don't roll. Mix into yogurt, porridge or compote for fork practice.

Cut:

Cooked berries halved or quartered, never served whole and round.
