How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Mix cooked fonio into mashed vegetables, stewed greens, or yogurt to bind the tiny grains. Use as binder in fritters or patties.

Cut:

Bound into a soft scoopable. Tiny loose grains are messy but safe.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve cooked fonio on its own, or in dosa, fritters, idli, meatballs, or pancakes broken into bite-sized pieces.

Cut:

Press grains with the back of a fork to help them stick. Bite-sized pieces of patties.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve cooked fonio alongside savory sauces, stews, or stir-fries. Press with a fork to clump and offer with an age-appropriate spoon.

Cut:

Pressed clumps or paired with sauce. Spoon practice encouraged.
