Cook until very soft. Raw fennel is fibrous and hard to gum. Slice thin and offer along the grain.

Prep:

Steam or braise wedges until completely soft and easily smashable. Remove tough core and outer layer.

Large soft wedges about two adult fingers wide for grasping.

9-12 months

Prep:

Steam until soft, then dice. Offer small pieces as the pincer grasp develops.

Cut:

Soft bite-sized pieces about the width of one adult finger.

12-18 months

Prep:

Steam or roast until tender, then chop. You can offer thin raw slices if your toddler chews well.

Cut:

Toddler-sized chopped pieces or thin slices for fork practice.
