Grasshoppers

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Blend chapulines or other cooked grasshoppers (legs, wings, tail removed) into sauces, soups, and stews. Or crush into powder for pancakes, patties, or meatballs.

Cut:

Blended into sauces, or powdered and sprinkled on finger food.

9-12 months

Prep:

Try chopped or whole chapulines for pincer practice. Drying and cooking makes them light and flaky. Serve one or two at a time. Avoid larger grasshoppers whole.

Cut:

Chopped or whole small chapulines, one or two at a time.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve chopped or whole chapulines as desired. Continue avoiding larger varieties whole until molars develop and chewing skills are mature.

Cut:

Chopped or whole chapulines; avoid larger species whole.
