How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Offer large lettuce ribs with the flimsy leaf removed for munching, or finely shred cooked lettuce and stir into scoopable foods like mash or grains.

Cut:

Whole ribs the size of an adult finger, or shredded fine and mixed in. Skip loose floppy leaves.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer finely chopped or shredded lettuce, rib or leaf, to build the pincer grasp. Toss with a little dressing and offer water so pieces don't stick to the tongue.

Cut:

Finely chopped or shredded pieces. You can still offer whole leaves for tearing practice.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve shredded or chopped lettuce, cooked or raw, as finger food or with a fork. Keep offering whole leaves for biting and tearing while you eat alongside.

Cut:

Shredded, chopped, or whole leaves. All shapes are fine now.
