Cook ripe berries until they burst, or smash very ripe ones with a fork. Stir into porridge, ricotta, or yogurt for an easy scoopable food.
Cooked and burst, or mashed; whole raw berries are not yet safe.
Quarter ripe, soft blackberries lengthwise so baby can practice the pincer grasp. Scatter on the tray to encourage one piece at a time.
Quartered lengthwise, or halved if comfortable.
Many toddlers can eat whole ripe blackberries now. Pick the largest, softest ones; smaller or firmer berries carry more choking risk.
Whole if large and very soft, otherwise halved or quartered.
