How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Halve lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. Steam or boil until very soft, then offer as a long strip.

Cut:

Long strips about the length of an adult finger, soft enough to squish.

9-12 months

Prep:

Cook until very soft and chop into small pieces for the pincer grasp.

Cut:

Bite-sized soft pieces about the width of one adult fingertip.

12-18 months

Prep:

Cook soft and serve in toddler-sized pieces, or mix into a dish to balance the bitterness.

Cut:

Soft pieces about the size of an adult thumbnail for fork or finger practice.
