Barley

Usually introduced around 6 months

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook barley as porridge and use it as a base for new flavors. Spices, mashed fruit, or finely ground nut work well.

Cut:

Soft porridge or strips of barley pancake the width of two adult fingers.

9-12 months

Prep:

Continue with porridges, pancakes, and breads. Mix cooked barley into meatballs or patties cut into bite-sized pieces.

Cut:

Bite-sized pieces to encourage pincer grasp. Whole grains alongside soft scoopables.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve in porridge, breads, pancakes, curries, soups, and stews. Cracked or pearled barley thickens stews for spoon practice.

Cut:

Cooked grains as is. Stews thickened with barley help spoon practice.
