How to prepare each food

Potato

Prep

Potato is always cooked, never raw. Boil, steam, bake, or roast until very soft, then mash to a smooth purée or offer a finger-length soft-cooked wedge. A little breast milk, formula, or water loosens a stiff mash. Skip salt.

Cut

Smooth mash, or a soft finger-length wedge.

Note

Cook potato until soft; raw or undercooked potato is hard. A very sticky, gluey mash can cling to the mouth, so loosen it or serve a fluffier texture. Keep pieces small and watch as your baby eats.

Chicken

Prep

Cook chicken fully, then purée smooth or finely shred and moisten with breast milk, formula, broth, or a vegetable purée so it isn't dry. Pairing it with a vitamin-C food can help the body use its iron. As an iron-rich first food, it's a good early option.

Cut

Smooth purée, or fine moist shreds.

Egg

Prep

Hard-cook the egg until both white and yolk are solid, then mash it smooth, or offer a well-set scramble or a soft omelet. A small amount, about a third of an egg, is plenty for a first taste.

Cut

Serve as a smooth mash, soft scramble curds, or finely chopped omelet strips.

Wheat

Prep

Wheat is one of the common food allergens, so it helps to offer it on its own first, in a small amount, and watch over the next couple of days before adding other new foods. Good early forms are a thick iron-fortified wheat cereal, soft well-cooked pasta, or lightly toasted bread cut into finger-width strips. Keep everything soft and moist, with no added salt or sugar.

Cut

Spoonable cereal, soft pasta, or finger-width strips of toast.

Note

Soft cooked wheat foods, pasta, moist bread, couscous, are low risk when kept soft and cut small. The hazards are the hard and dry forms: whole wheat kernels (wheat berries), hard crusty bread chunks, dry seeded crackers, and popcorn, which are difficult to chew and can be inhaled. Soft bread can also clump into a sticky wad in the mouth, so offer small pieces with a drink and stay nearby.

Putting it together

Savory waffles made from mashed potato, shredded chicken and egg.
