How to prepare each food

Oatmeal

Prep

Serve oatmeal a little thicker so your baby can scoop it or feed it on a pre-loaded spoon. You can also bake soft oat fingers or stir in mashed fruit.

Cut

Thick scoopable oatmeal, or soft baked oat fingers about finger-width.

Yogurt

Prep

Keep offering plain, full-fat, pasteurized yogurt, letting your baby practice self-feeding with a spoon. You can thicken it with mashed fruit or fold it into porridge. Still avoid sweetened and honey-containing yogurts.

Cut

Spoonable. Offer on a spoon for self-feeding practice.

Cheese

Prep

Keep cheese pasteurized and full-fat. Grated cheese or thin, soft strips melted into warm food are easier to manage than chunks. As your baby practises picking things up, a thin soft strip that bends easily is fine, but avoid firm cubes. Keep an eye on the salt.

Cut

Grated, or thin soft strips that bend; not firm cubes.

Note

A chunk or firm cube of cheese can block a small airway. Serve cheese finely grated, as a thin smear, or in thin soft strips, and avoid large firm pieces.

Tomato

Prep

Offer small soft pieces of peeled, de-seeded ripe tomato as the pincer grasp develops. Keep cherry and grape tomatoes quartered lengthwise into four small pieces so no round or rounded-half shape remains.

Cut

Small soft peeled pieces; cherry/grape tomatoes quartered lengthwise (four pieces).

Note

Cherry and grape tomatoes are a classic choking shape: whole or halved, they can block a small airway. Always quarter them lengthwise into small pieces, and keep doing so until about age 4. Peel and de-seed larger tomatoes, since the skin can bunch up while chewing.

Putting it together

Small yogurt-dough pizza rounds topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and vegetables, baked until set.
