Fish, Corn and Tomato

Fish, Corn and Tomato

From 6 months · 3 foods

Ingredients

How to prepare each food

Fish

Prep

Cook the fish all the way through, never raw or seared. Choose a low-mercury fish and remove every bone by running your fingers through the flesh. Flake it small and mash it smooth, or stir the flakes into a purée. Introduce it on its own and wait a few days before adding another new allergen.

Cut

Pea-size flakes, checked by hand for bones, or smooth purée.

Note

Bones are the main risk with fish. Run your fingers through the cooked flesh every time and remove every bone before serving, even with fillets sold as boneless.

Corn

Prep

Cook corn until soft, then purée the kernels smooth, or mash them well. A smooth corn purée can be mixed into other vegetables or grains.

Cut

A smooth purée or a thorough mash, never whole kernels.

Note

Whole corn kernels are round and firm and can be inhaled, so they are a choking hazard for babies and young children. Purée, mash, or finely chop the kernels rather than serving them whole, and skip corn on the cob, where kernels come off whole.

Tomato

Prep

Choose a ripe, soft tomato. Peel off the skin (it can bunch up and be hard to chew), scoop out the seedy core, and mash the flesh or stir it into a purée. If offering a piece to hold, give a soft finger-length strip of peeled flesh. Cherry and grape tomatoes are a round choking shape, so always quarter them lengthwise into small pieces and never serve them whole or halved.

Cut

Peeled, mashed, or a soft finger-length strip; quarter cherry/grape tomatoes lengthwise.

Note

Cherry and grape tomatoes are a classic choking shape: whole or halved, they can block a small airway. Always quarter them lengthwise into small pieces, and keep doing so until about age 4. Peel and de-seed larger tomatoes, since the skin can bunch up while chewing.

Putting it together

Prepare each ingredient using the age guidance above, then serve them together.
