How to prepare each food

Egg

Prep

Keep the egg fully cooked and offer it as easy finger food. As the pincer grasp develops, your little one can pick up small pieces on their own.

Cut

Offer omelet strips, quartered hard-boiled egg, or chopped scramble.

Plantain

Prep

Offer well-cooked plantain in small soft pieces as the pincer grasp develops. Keep it cooked until fork-tender so it mashes easily, and avoid firm or underripe pieces that stay dense.

Cut

Small soft pieces, about Β½ inch, fork-tender.

Note

Underripe or undercooked plantain stays firm and dense. Cook it until soft enough to squish between two fingers, and keep pieces small so it stays easy to manage.

Mozzarella cheese

Prep

Keep offering pasteurized mozzarella finely grated or melted into dishes. As the pincer grasp develops, very thin short strips of soft fresh mozzarella can be tried, but skip balls, rounds, and chunks.

Cut

Finely grated, melted, or very thin soft strips; no balls, rounds, or chunks.

Note

A mozzarella ball, a large piece, or a thick round slice is a choking hazard because of its round, springy shape. Grate it, melt it, or cut it into small thin soft strips rather than offering balls or chunks, and keep this up through the toddler years.

Putting it together

A rolled egg omelet with browned ripe plantain and mozzarella, sliced into rounds.
