How to prepare each food

Egg

Prep

Keep the egg fully cooked and offer it as easy finger food. As the pincer grasp develops, your little one can pick up small pieces on their own.

Cut

Offer omelet strips, quartered hard-boiled egg, or chopped scramble.

Carrot

Prep

Keep carrots soft-cooked as your baby's pincer grasp develops. Steam or roast until fork-tender, then offer small soft pieces. Finely grated raw carrot can also be folded into other foods. Avoid any raw hard rounds, coins, or sticks.

Cut

Small soft-cooked cubes or pieces (about Β½ inch / 1 cm), or finely grated raw carrot mixed in. No raw hard coins or sticks. Cooked pieces must stay fork-soft.

Note

Raw carrot is one of the top choking hazards for young children: it is hard, firm, and breaks into round, airway-sized pieces. Always cook it until soft enough to squish between two fingers, or grate it finely. Avoid raw carrot coins, rounds, sticks, and chunks until around age 4, when chewing is reliable.

Banana

Prep

As the pincer grasp develops, offer small soft pieces or thin slices the baby can pick up. Keep using ripe banana so each piece squishes easily. Rolling pieces in a little fine cereal can make slippery banana easier to grip.

Cut

Small soft pieces or thin slices, about Β½ inch (1 cm).

Note

Banana is low-risk when fully ripe and soft. A firm or under-ripe banana is harder to manage, so mash it or wait until it ripens. Always supervise eating.

Putting it together

A soft crepe with a hidden carrot, spread with your favorite topping and rolled around a banana.
