How to prepare each food

Banana

Prep

Offer bite-size soft chunks. A whole peeled banana works for self-feeding too, with supervision, since it mashes as the toddler bites. Keep pieces small and stay close while eating.

Cut

Bite-size soft chunks, or a whole peeled banana with supervision.

Note

Banana is low-risk when fully ripe and soft. A firm or under-ripe banana is harder to manage, so mash it or wait until it ripens. Always supervise eating.

Oatmeal

Prep

Offer oatmeal as a family breakfast, topped with mashed or chopped fruit. Keep it free of added sugar, and watch that toppings stay soft and bite-size.

Cut

Served as oatmeal, with any fruit toppings soft and in small pieces.

Wheat

Prep

Wheat fits easily into family meals now: soft cooked pasta, couscous, soft breads, and tortillas, chopped into small pieces. Avoid hard, dry, and crumbly forms like crusty bread chunks and seeded crackers, and skip popcorn, which stays a choking risk at this age. Keep added salt and sugar low, and favor whole-grain or fortified wheat where you can for the extra fiber and iron.

Cut

Soft cooked grains, pasta, or bread chopped small; avoid hard, dry, and crumbly forms.

Note

Soft cooked wheat foods, pasta, moist bread, couscous, are low risk when kept soft and cut small. The hazards are the hard and dry forms: whole wheat kernels (wheat berries), hard crusty bread chunks, dry seeded crackers, and popcorn, which are difficult to chew and can be inhaled. Soft bread can also clump into a sticky wad in the mouth, so offer small pieces with a drink and stay nearby.

Egg

Prep

Any well-set form works now, in bite-size pieces. Cook it through and keep added salt low.

Cut

Bite-size pieces.

Cacao

Prep

Keep cocoa as an occasional flavoring in yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, or soft baked goods, still without added sugar. A small amount goes a long way.

Cut

Fine powder mixed into food; cut any soft baked pieces bite-size.

Cinnamon

Prep

Cinnamon can be a regular flavoring in family foods. Add a small amount to oatmeal, baked fruit, French toast, rice pudding, or smoothies. Choose plain ground cinnamon with no added sugar, and keep mixing it into a moist food so it does not become a dry powdery bite.

Cut

A pinch of ground cinnamon stirred into moist family food; avoid loose dry powder.

Note

Loose dry cinnamon powder can make a baby cough or gag if it is inhaled. Always mix it into a moist food and never let your baby eat it dry from a spoon.
